الأمثال علم قائم بذاته، يمتاز بقصر عبارته ووضوح معناه وتضمنه لحكمة إضافة إلى سهولة حفظه وهي بلا شك تعبير صادق عن طبيعة العصر الذي قيلت فيه وانعكاساً لمواقفه وآرائه ومعتقداته. وقد ارتأت الدكتورة "رحاب عكاوي" أن تجمع ما تناثر من الأمثال في هذا الكتاب فعمدت إلى تنسيقها وشرحها وترتيبها حسب حروف الهجاء كما تطرقت إلى ذكر أصول كل مثل وسبله، فوقفت على أصولها كما ضربت صفحاً عن الأمثال المضروبة في التناهي والمبالغة كما استبعدت ما هو من حديث المولدين وما ليس عربياً صحيحاً. وقد بدأت بباب الهمزة وانتهت بباب الياء، كما أفردت قسماً خاصاً بالأمثال الشعبية الرائجة واتبعت في ترتيبها حروف المعجم حيث ألحقت كل باب بالباب الذي يماثله من الأمثال العربية الواردة. وأخيراً ضمنت الكتاب باقة من الأمثال العالمية اللاتينية والفرنسية والإنكليزية والألمانية والإيطالية وغيرها.
