يجمع المؤرخون على أن الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي (99-101هـ) كان إماماً في العربية، كما كان في استخراج مسائل النحو وتصحيح القياس فيه، كما كان أول من استنبط علم العروض، وما من شك في أن معرفته بالإيقاع والنظم أعانته على استنباط هذا العلم العروضي الذي لم يأخذه عن أستاذ ولا احتذاه على مثال سابق. ويبدو أنه كان للعرب منذ الجاهلية شيء من هذا العلم وأسماء أوجهه، ولكن الخليل دوّن هذا العلم تاماً كاملاً وجعل له قواعده وأشار إلى شواذه، وذلك بأن استعرض أشعار العرب واستخرج الأبحر التي نظم العرب تلك الأشعار عليها. وأما امامته في النحو فيكفي فيها قول ابن خلدون في مقدمته: "وكان سابق الحلبة في ذلك الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي، ألف كتاب العين فحصر فيه مركبات الحروف (حروف المعجم) كلها من الثنائي والثلاثي والرباعي والخماسي... واستوعبه أحسن استيعاب وأوفاه) حول هذا العلم يدور البحث في هذا الكتاب حيث يتناول أولاً الحديث عن نشأة علم النحو ثم من حياة الخليل وعلمه وعن الخليل رافع قواعد النحو والصرف ومفرداته العربية ومصطلحه النحو متنقلاً من ثم للحديث عن كتاب الخليل "العين" متطرقاً بعدها لحكاية الفهرست في نسبة العين إلى الخليل، وعن المنهج للكشف عن الكلمات في العين، متحدثاً من ثم عن الخليل وعلم العروض وعن نتف من أخبار للخليل مسند من نور القبس وأخيراً عن بعضها في افتتاح "العين" وخمسة أبواب منه.
