إن هذا الكاتب الذى جعل رواياته حواراً مستمراً بينه وبين القارئ ، كان يختبيء في حياة منطفئة هي حياة موظف ، أو في مكتبه قرب صفحة بيضاء ، أو في حديقته إلى جانب زوج يساقيهما حباً رقيقاً . هذا الرجل لم يكن هناك أحد أكثر منه وطنية ، غير أنه كان يضع الوطنية في الفن ، إن هذا الرجل كان بغير إيمان ولا دين ، هذا الرجل الذي رفض معونة الكاهن لحظة وفاته ، قد جعل الادب رهبانية حقيقة . كان يرى أن خير وسيلة لخدمة بلادة البرازيل هي أن يهب لها آثاراً أدبية جديرة بها ، وإذا كان قد هجر الرومانسية ، فمرد ذلك إلى أنه رأها أدب مراهقين لا ثمرة حضارة ناضجة
