يعتبر المؤلف من أكثر كتاب البرازيل برازيلية, حيث نجد في رواياته أصدق تصوير للمجتمع الامبراطوري في النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر, مع الصراع بين الحب والمال, بين ارستقراطية الأرض والبرجوازية الناشئة, بين الشارع والمنزل, وهو يظهر تمسكه بوطنه في ابتعاده خاصة عن المدارس المستوردة من أورربا, وفي وقف حياته كلها على خلق لغة برازيلية. ولكن التمسك بالوطن لا يعني الانغلاق والانعزال. فهو إذ يكتب روايات نفسية يستطيع أن يكون برازيلياً إلى أبعد حد وأن يفتح للأدب البرازيلي في الوقت نفسه مجالاً عالمياً. إن أدبه أدب برازيلي لأن أبطاله يعبرون عن جو البرازيل, ولكنه في الوقت نفسه أدب عالمي لأن التحليل الذي يتضمنه يقدم لمن ينتمون الى حضارات أخرى أصالة طيبة المذاق تأتيهم من بلد آخر.إنه يضع أرضه وزمانه في آثاره ولكنه يخرج منهما عطراً يصلح لأناس من أرض أخرى وأزمنة أخرى.
