هو نسخة مبسطة لتناسب الصغار ، حيث حُذفت بعض القصص المخصصة للبالغين وبُسطت بعض الكلمات لتناسب صغار السنّ.
ويَنبَغي للنَّاظِرِ في هذا الكتابِ أن يَعلَمَ أنَّه يَنقَسِمُ إلى أربعَةِ أغراضٍ:
أحَدُها: ما قُصِدَ فيه إلى وضعِهِ على ألسِنَةِ البَهائِمِ غيرِ النَّاطِقَةِ، ليسارع أهل الهَزلِ مِنَ الشُّبَّانِ لقِراءَتِهِ، فتُستَمال به قلوبُهُمْ له، لأنَّ هذا هو الغَرَضُ بالنَّوادِرِ من حِيَلِ الحيواناتِ.
والثاني: إظهارُ خَيالاتِ الحيواناتِ بصُنوفِ الأصباغِ والألوانِ، ليكونَ أُنْسًا لقُلوبِ الملوك ويكونَ حِرصُهُمْ عليه أشَدَّ للنُزهَةِ في تلك الصُّوَرِ.
والثالثُ: أن يكونَ على هذه الصِّفَةِ فَيَتَّخِذَهُ الملوكُ والسُّوقَةُ، فيكثُرَ بذلك انتِساخُهُ ولا يَبطُلَ فَيَخْلقَ على مُرورِ الأيامِ، ولينتَفِعَ بذلك المصَوِّرُ والنَّاسِخُ أبدًا.
والرابعُ وهو الأقصى: مخْصوصٌ بالحكيم خاصَّةً، أعني الوقوف على أسرار معاني الكتاب الباطنة.
