في روايته (قيلولة أحد خريفي) يقدم الكاتب هشام بن الشاوي مقاربة معرفية لمفهوم الذات تقترب من علم النفس عبر قالب روائي اصطنعه الكاتب ووضع الشخصيات في داخله ليعري نمطاً من الواقع المرير الذي تعيشه الذات في علاقاتها المشبوهة والمتعنفة وأحياناً المتناقضة مع ذواتها المتعددة (الأقنعة) ومع الآخرين ومع المكان.
اعتبر النقاد رواية قيلولة أحد خريفي رواية الفضح والكشف أو ما يسميه الدكتور محمد براده بأسلوب التشخيص أو الشخصنة، حيث يعمد الرواة إلى كشف المستور ووضع العلب السوداء للفرد على طاولة القارئ ليقلبها على وجوهها مكتشفاُ بعضاً من ذاته.
يصطنع الروائي لكل وحدة سردية في العمل عنواناً، ويقوم يسرد حكاية هذا العنوان، وقد تكون ثمة فجوة زمنية أو مكانية أو معرفية بين عنوان وآخر، أنه ثمة خيطاً سردياً دقيقاً ينتظم العناوين بمهارة ليعبر عما يريد قوله الراوئي.
من هذه العناوين نذكر: 1- تنبح ذلك النباح الأشبه بالتوسل المتوجع، كما تفعل الكلاب عند رؤية صاحبها الغائب معبرة عن أشواقها الجريحة. 2- هل يمكن أن يبنى أي كاتب معمار روايته من دون قصة حب تضفي بعض الشجن عليها؟ 3- لو كنت بطلاً في رواية أو فيلم سينمائي لخلفت قميصي وشرعت في الكتابة عليه. (...)الخ.
