محمد بن علي بن عطية الحارثي، أبو طالب: واعظ زاهد، فقيه.
من أهل الجبل (بين بغداد وواسط) نشأ واشتهر بمكة.
ورحل إلى البصرة فاتهم بالاعتزال.
وسكن بغداد فوعظ فيها، فحفظ عنه الناس أقوالا هجروه من أجلها.
وتوفي ببغداد.
له (قوت القلوب - ط) في التصوف، مجلدان، قال الخطيب البغدادي: ذكر فيه أشياء منكرة مستشنعة في الصفات، و (علم القلوب - خ) و (أربعون حديثا) أخرجها لنفسه .

هذا الكتاب لأبي طالب المكي يعتبر من أمهات الكتب في التراث الصوفي الإسلامي، وهو من أهم كتب التعليم الصوفي التي لا يستغنى عنها في تربية المريدين وتثقيفهم ثقافة إسلامية صحيحة بعيدة عن البدع والخرافات، ولا يضاهيهما في ذلك كتاب آخر، يقول المحقق في بداية الكتاب: أن كتابي قوت القلوب وإحياء علوم الدين يتكاملان فالمكي قد جمع أقوال السلف والكثير من الأخبار والأمثال والحكم، ونفذ إلى سرائر دقت على الأفهام، والغزالي جمع بين علمي الظاهر والباطن، والقارئ للقوت والإحياء سوف يجد أن الكتابان يجمعان بين الشريعة والطريقة والحقيقة في الدنيا والآخرة، فمن أراد طريق الله وطريق رسوله، وطريق العارفين بالله، وطريق العلماء من أهل الظاهر والباطن، فعليه بمطالعة الكتابين القوت والإحياء.
