محمد بن علي بن عطية الحارثي، أبو طالب: واعظ زاهد، فقيه.
من أهل الجبل (بين بغداد وواسط) نشأ واشتهر بمكة.
ورحل إلى البصرة فاتهم بالاعتزال.
وسكن بغداد فوعظ فيها، فحفظ عنه الناس أقوالا هجروه من أجلها.
وتوفي ببغداد.
له (قوت القلوب - ط) في التصوف، مجلدان، قال الخطيب البغدادي: ذكر فيه أشياء منكرة مستشنعة في الصفات، و (علم القلوب - خ) و (أربعون حديثا) أخرجها لنفسه .

دبرت الأحكام حكمته وصرفت المحكومات مشيئته، فأظهر في الغيب والشهادة لطيف قدرته وعمّ في العاجل والآجل خلقه بنعمته، ونشر على مَن أحبّ منهم فضله، وبسط لجميعهم عدلة، وأنعم عليهم بتعريفهم إياه، سبحانه وتعالى، به عزّ وجلّ، وأحسن إليهم بإجتبائه إياهم إليه، وأفضل عليهم بتيسير كلامه لهم، ومنَّ عليهم ببعثه رسولاً من أنفسهم إليهم.
فنسأله الصلاة على النبي وآله، وأن يوزعنا بفضله وشكر نعمه، ويعرفنا خفيّ قدره، وصلى الله تبارك وتعالى على سيّد الأوليّن والآخرين، رسوله المفضل بالشفاعة والحوض المورود، المخصوص بالوسيلة والمقام المحمود، وعلى أخوانه السالفين في الأزمان، وأنصاره التابعين بإحسان.
هذا كتاب قوت القلوب في معاملة المحبوب ووصف طريق المريد إلى مقام التوحيد، تصنيف الشيخ أبي طالب محمد بن علي بن عطية الحارثي المكي رضي الله عنه - يشتمل على ثمانية وأربعين فصلاً.
