ما كان الاهتمام بالطفولة – منذ وقت - أمرا ضروريا ، وذا أهمية للأسرة والمربين كثيرا ، ذلك أن النظرة إلى الطفل والطفولة كانت ساذجة مسطحة ، تتناسب مع بساطة الطفولة وضعفها وهونها ، وبالطبع لعدم قدرة الطفل على إدراك ما يعانيه والشكوى الصريحة من عدم سويته ، ولهذا لم يكن التعامل مع هذه القضايا ميسورا أو مقدورا عليه ، بل كان الطفل عرضة للازدراء والسخرية ، وفي النهاية استسلام لهذه الأقدار التي نكبت بها العائلة أو أصيب بها أحد أفرادها .
ذالك أن علم الطفولة ظل إلى أمد قريب ، عالما مغلقا لم يعثر على مفاتيحه يسهولة ، حتى اهتدى الأطباء إلى طب الأطفال والأدباء إلى أدب الطفل والمربون إلى تربية الطفل والمغنون إلى اغنية الطفل ، والرياضيون على رياضة الطفل ، وعلماء النفس على علم نفس الطفولة ، وكل هذا دل على أن الطفولة مرحلة متميزة ، يجب التعامل معها بأعين وذهن متيقظ .
وهذا المجال الذي ارتاده علماء على مساحة الحضارات الحديثة المختلفة ، لم يصلنا إلا بعد جهد مشكور من المترجمين ، وجهود في المساقات الجامعية لطلبة التربية ، ومع ذلك لم تغادر هذه العلوم أذهان المختصين ، كعلم خاص بالطبقة المتعلمة , ولم تجد طريقها إلى البيوت والآباء والأمهات ، بل ظلت متعالية في بطون الكتب الأكاديمية البحتة ،
لذلك كان لا بد من نقلة في هذا المجال ، وهو تبسيط هذه العلوم ، فيما اعتاد عليه الناس من أدب علمي ،ليكون مادة ثقافية متاحة لغير المتخصصين من الناس .
