لم أكن أحفظُ إلا الفاتحةَ أقرأُهَا بصعوبةٍ بالغة، أنتقلُ من غيط إلى غيط وأسرع ُالخطى للوصولِ بالكوبِ ممتلأ. وأحدثُّ نفسي:
ابنُ الشيطانِ أخذ جنيهين، مبلغٌ يكفي البيتَ شهراً، لعنةُ اللهِ عليه، التوتْ قدمي فجأةً وأوشكتُ أنْ أتهاوى، ألقيتُ بظهري إلى نخلةٍ واستندتُ عليها واستعدتُ توازني والكوبُ بين يديَّ، مكثتُ للحظاتٍ حتى هدأتْ أنفاسي وأكملتُ السيرَ وأنا مندهشٌ لم أتعثرْ في شيء، كنتُ أفكرُ منْ الذي سيكتبُ الآيةَ حولَ سرةِ مختار؟ تسعةٌ رجال! لا نعرفُ الكتابةَ.. مأساة.
عبرتُ المصرفَ على فلقِ النخلِ، وأنا في المنتصفِ رأيتُ على الضِفةِ المقابلةِ قطاً أسودَ كالليلِ، عيناهُ تلمعان كقمرينِ مثبتينِ في المحاجر، الكوبُ الألومنيومُ بين كفيَّ، قدماي متسمرتانِ على فلقِ النخل، وهذا القطُ يقفُ حائلاً بيني وبين بابِ البيت، كلما جاءتْ عيناه ُفي عينيَّ يقشعرُ بدنى وأرتجفُ، أردتُ أن أتقدم َوأرفسَهُ بقدمي لكنّى تسمرتُ، نظرتُ إلى نصفِ القمرِ في صفحةِ الماءِ وإلى القطِ الذى حولتني عيناه ُإلى حجرٍ حي، ودونَ أيِ شعورٍ بالخزي صرختُ كالحريم، لم أكن خائفا إلاّ على الكوب، خرج الجميعُ، رأوني متسمرا على فلق ِالنخلِ في النورِ الخافت.
أسرعوا نحوي، قلتُ لماهر: ..القطُ.. أبعدْ القطَ، نظروا جميعاً حولهم وقالوا لا تُوجد قططٌ !
