عندما نقرأ تاريخ الفلسفة لا تعترضنا شخصية ارنست ماخ، اسمه كان مرتبطا دائما بالفيزياء، إلا أن نظريته الفيزيائية جعلته يمارس الفلسفة بطريقة لاشعورية، لأنه عبر أبحاثه في الفيزياء ساهم في بناء نظريته في المعرفة. يعتبر ارنست ماخ مؤسس المدرسة التحليلية الوضعية التى عرفت بجمعية ارنست ماخ (Ernst Mach association) ثم تغير اسمها بعد الحرب العالمية الأولى إلى حلقة فيينا (Vienna circle) . منهجه يقوم على النقد التاريخي بهدف تقويض المثالية المتعالية والمعرفة الميتافيزيقية، باحثا من خلال هذا المنهج عن ان المعرفة في العلم يجب أن تكون امبيريقية ولا وجود بالتالي لما يسمى بالمفاهيم الماقبلية التى دافع عنها الفيلسوف الألماتي ايمانويل كانط. يمكن القول أن مقاربته العلمية والفلسفية تنبأت بالنتائج التى تمخضت عن مؤتمر غوبنهاغن سنة 1927 حول تفسير ميكانيزم الذرة، حيث فقدت ظواهر الطبيعة طابعها الحتمي وأصبحت احتمالية وتقريبية، كما أن ألبرت اينشتاين تأثر بفلسفة ماخ وساعدته كثيرا في صياغة نظرية النسبية .
