مستشرق فرنسي ومؤرخ ولغوي وعالم الأديان، والآثار الشرقية، علاوة على تخصصه في تاريخ اللغات والشعوب السامية، حاول دراسة العالم الإسلامي بطريقة علمية وبمنهجية العلم الحديث في عصره، ساهمت دراساته بشكل كبير في التعريف بالثقافة العربية الإسلامية في العالم الغربي.
حظيت مؤلفاته بشعبية كبيرة في الشرق والغرب على السواء، وقد تُوجت أعماله بجوائز المعهد العلمي الفرنسي والدولة الفرنسية، وانتخب منذ عام 1878 وحتى وفاته عضواً في الأكاديمية الفرنسية، إضافية إلى شغله لمناصب علمية وثقافية عدة في أكثر من موقع أكاديمي.
خاض معارك فكرية حادة مع رجال الكنيسة، رافضاً أن يغير أيّاً من قناعاته أو أفكاره تحت ضغوطهم أو ضغوط مناصريهم، وقد أثّرت شاعرية أسلوبه في الكتابة ورشاقة عبارته وعمق أفكاره، على عدد كبير من الكَّتَّأب الفرنسيين ممن جاؤا بعده، ومن أبرز كتبه: مستقبل العلم، ابن رشد والرشدية، التاريخ العام للغات السامية، دراسات في تاريخ الأديان، محاورات فلسفية.
