"فديتك ليلى" قصة تعود بالذاكرة إلى زمن الرومانسية والأدب الرومانسي الذي انسحبت ظلاله رويداً رويداً عن فن الأدب الروائي أو كادت يأخذ يوسف السباعي القارئ في رحلة يطلق عبرها مشاعره وأحاسيسه التي تتفاعل وبصدق مع راجية، إبراهيم، الشخصيتان المحوريتان، وليلى الشخصية الثانوية، ويحس بنفسه متواجداً تارة في بيت راجية وطوراً على شاطئ البحر يلمح الطاحونة ويرى بعيني إبراهيم مأساة أخته ليلى، ويعيش بمشاعره لحظات تأنيب الضمير لأنه كان السبب في سقوطها من أعلى الطاحونة.
وتتجمع خيوط المأساة عند بروز شخصية ليلى المعقدة التي استحوذت على مشاعر إبراهيم، لا على قلبه كما كان يعتقد لأن ذلك كان بداعي الشفقة، قصة تنمو تفاصيلها وتتسارع أحداثها ضمن مناخ روائي نفذ السباعي من خلاله إلى الاسترسال في عرض المشكلة من منظور اجتماعي فلسفي إنساني، احتلت راجية ووضعها العائلي الأرستقراطي والمفاهيم المرتبطة بتلك الطبقة والتي كانت عقبة في طريق ارتباطها بإبراهيم عازف الموسيقى، جزء من تلك القصة، واحتل إبراهيم بعقدة النفسية الجزء الأهم من هذه القصة التي تتشابك خيوطها مع مضي إبراهيم في توجساته العاطفية اتجاه فتاة الشاطئ وهجره لحبيبته وخطيبته راجية، والتي شهدت الرواية معهما تفاصيل قصة الحب الرومانسية.
