في مجموعتها القصصية هذه، تعيد الدكتورة ليلى الصقر إلى القصة العربية اللغة التقليدية المتمثلة بلغة الأدب القديم من شعر، ونثرٍ مقامي، وتاريخي، وفنيّ وغيره، فالقارئ للقصة المعنونة للمجموعة «عندما تزوج قيس ليلى»، يجد فيها الكثير من المجاز، والبديع الذي شاع، وعُرف في الآداب القديمة، نثراً وشعراً ، إذ جعلت الكاتبة من الحوار الدائر بين العاشقين (قيس وليلى) سيمفونية عشق أبدي : "أنا ليلى العامرية ابنة العشيرة.. نعم أحبك ولكنني أضعف من أن أجعل حبنا فعل إرادة.. فإن كنت تحبني يا قيس فاسمعْ صوت القبيلة وانسني... ليلى... ليلى... أهذي باسمك كالمحموم.. أجهد جسدي العليل، النحيل بالعمل... أريد أن يهده التعب.. أن يأكله مرض يفوق حمى حبك.. ليلى... ليلى..."، لقد استخدمت الكاتبة من الركائز التي يقوم عليها فن السرد، اللغة التي فيها المزيد من تحليل الشخوص، ورسم ملامح الوجوه، وإبراز السجايا والطباع، إلى ذلك الرغبة في تقريب مادة السرد المحكيّ – عن طريق اللغة – من التراث القصصي القديم، على أساس أن الشخوص ما هي إلاَّ صورة لذلك العالم الذي عاشت وتحركت فيه، بما يميزه من حوادث، وأمكنة وزمان، فجمعت في رويها نسيجاً لفظياً متميزاً بين لغة ذات طابع قديم حيناً، وأخرى ذات طابع حيوي حديث "عندما تزوج قيس ليلى أعدّ نفسه للرجم والنفي والحرق.. ولكنه لم يعرف أن الواقع قد يخنق القصيدة.. لقد مات العاشق المجنون.. وماتت ليلى الأسطورة.. عندما تزوج قيس ليلى..".
يشتمل الكتاب على مجموعة قصص توزعت على أربعة عناوين رئيسية هي:1- نبضات امرأة وتضم: "حلم عصفور المطر"، "امرأة أخرى"، "أرجوك لا تبعني يا أبي"، 2- حلم وواقع وتضم: "أحلام منصور"، "عندما تزوج قيس ليلى"، "3- شجرة الزيتون (إلى فلسطين)، وتضم: "صوتي"، "وحش وزيتون"، "المزاد"، 4- عرس الدم، وتضم: "أبحث عن لغتي"، "العناق الأخير (الطاعون)".
