إن من الضروري قبل أن تتناول الحفائر الأثرية تلك التي هي أصل الهدف من ذلك الكتاب بالتفصيل والتحليل أن نتحدث عن علم الآثار. لأنه العلم ذلك الذي تمارس تلك الحفائر عبره، ولأن شرح تلك الحفائر وعرض طرقها وأنواعها ومبادئها وأهدافها ومتطلباتها ونتائجها دون عرض أو تعريف للعلم ذلك الذي هي جزء منه يعد في نظرنا- عملا علميا ناقصا أو مبتورا، ومن هنا كان الحديث عن علم الآثار من ناحية تعريفه وأهميته وأعلامه ومشكلاته والعلوم المعاونة له أهمية يجب لها أن تسبق الحديث عن حفائره، كما أن الحديث عن معالجة الآثار المكتشفة منها سواء كانت آثاراً معمارية أو منقولة من كل ما يصيبها من عوامل التلف المتعارضة أهمية يجب لها أن تلحق الحديث عنها حتى يكون ذلك الحديث منتهى، والعرض فيه غير منقوص، حتى تكون فائدته قدر المستطاع وافية غير قاصرة. وعلى أساس من تلك القناعة، وبنيانا على ما أمكن الوقوف عليه من مادة علمية (عربية وغير عربية) ليست بالعديدة لنقص المادة المكتوبة في ذلك المجال حتى الآن. فإن حديثنا عن علم الآثار في ذلك الباب سينحصر في ثلاثة فصول يختص أولها بتعريف علم الآثار عبر عرض يوضح ماهية ذلك العلم وفروعه المتعارضة في شتى الأمكنة والأزمنة .
