ليس هذا الكتاب الصغير فهرساً ولا جدول مؤلفات، حتى أنه أقل من أن يكون لائحة جوائز فهناك أسماء شهيرة غير موجودة فيه، ولائحة بالعلماء من ذوي الفضل على علم الآثار، وبالأماكن التي إرتادوها ونبشوها، وبالدروس التي نشروها، تفيض عن الفسحة التي نتصرف بها، إلا أن القارئ، لن ينتظر إحصاءاً مملاً، فالموضوع واسع بشكل غريب لأنه يشمل مبدئياً علم الآثار بمجموعه، والحق فقد مضى الوقت الذي كان فيه هذا العلم " إغريقاً – رومانياً " أو " كلاسيكياً " فقط، حتى ولا " من العصور القديمة "، وعلينا أن نشير إلى مراحل علم لم ينقطع عن توسيع ميدانه، وفي الفترة المعاصرة على الخصوص فإن علماء الآثار وكذلك الأمكنة لم يرد ذكرهم في أغلب الأحيان إلا كمثل أو برهان لتفسير ودعم ملاحظة أساسية، ومن ناحيتنا لا يوجد حكم ذو قيمة ولا إختيار أسلوبي. وبعد شيء من التعريفات الضرورية رسمنا مخططاً تاريخياً يصبح أكثر سرعة وأكثر إختصاراً بمقدار إقترابه من السنوات العشر الأخيرة، وبالفعل، فالفصول التالية خصصت لتلك السنوات، فصل يستعرض الأقسام التي يتوزع البحث الأثري بينها، والفصول الأخرى تظهر كيف أن المفاهيم الحالية للأسلوب، والحفر، والحفظ، والنشر تتعارض مع مفاهيم القرن الماضي. وقد أشير أخيراً إلى بعض العوائق والأخطار التي تترصد علم الآثار الماضي والحاضر.
