كتاب عصر السريان الذهبي تأليف فيليب دي طرازي، لا يستطيع أيُّ منصِف أن يتحدث عن تاريخ الحضارات دون أن يذكر دور السريان ولغتهم التي لُقِّبَتْ ﺑ «أميرة الثقافة وأم الحضارة»، فكانوا بمثابة القنطرة التي عبرت عليها العلوم والمعارف لتصل إلى العرب وأوروبا؛ فترجموا من اليونانية إلى السريانية، ومنها إلى العربية، ثم إلى اللاتينية، وأخيرًا للغات الأوروبية الحديثة. ولم يكن السريان مجرَّد نَقَلة، بل كانوا مبدعين أيضًا؛ فقد أضافوا خبرتَهم ومعارفهم، فطوَّروا وجدَّدوا. وكتب السريانُ في عدة موضوعات منها: الفلسفة، والمنطق، والموسيقى، والأدب، والهندسة، والزراعة، والتجارة، والطبيعة، والرياضيَّات، والفلك، والفيزياء، والطب. وكان منهم مَن يشار إليه بالبَنَانِ، مثل «حنين بن إسحاق العبادي» الذي ترجم تسعة وثلاثين مخطوطًا من اليونانيَّة إلى العربيَّة، وترجم خمسة وتسعين مخطوطًا من اليونانيَّة إلى السريانيَّة. لقد كان السريان حلقة في مضمار الحضارة العالمية.
