أما القصة الثانية “مرتا البانية" فتناولت قصة فتاة ريفية بسيطة تذهب إلى المدينة فتحولها الحياة الصعبة إلى عاهرة. تموت بين يدي أحد الرحماء حيث الإعتراف و البوح.
وجاءت القصة الثالثة بعنوان يوحنا المجنون. جرت أحداث هذه القصة في بلدة يستبد بها الجهل و يتحكم الكهنة الفاسدون بمصائر العباد يأتي يوحنا متمرداً بعد قراءة الكتاب المقدس -الأمر المحظور على العامة- و قد عرف تعاليم المسيح الحقيقية فواجه الظلمة مما جعل مصيره النبذ و السجن و أخيراً اتهامه بالجنون.
أتخذ جبران إتجاه روحي في هذه القصص بالإضافة إلى الطابع القصصي الشعري الواضح المعالم في مضمون الأقاصيص.
