ويبدأ طور العظام مع بداية الأسبوع السابع حيث يبدأ الهيكل العظمي الغضروفي في الانتشار في الجسم كله،
فيأخذ الجنين شكل الهيكل العظمي وتكَوُّن العظام هو أبرز شىء في هذا الطور، حيث يتم الانتقال من شكل المضغة الذي لا ترى فيه ملامح الصورة الآدمية إلى بداية شكل الهيكل العظمي في فترة زمنية وجيزة، وهذا الهيكل العظمي هو الذي يعطي الجنين مظهره الآدمي.
ومصطلح العظام الذي أطلقه القرآن الكريم على هذا الطور هو المصطلح الذي يعبر عن هذه المرحلة من حياة الحُمَيل تعبيراً دقيقاً يشمل المظهر الخارجي، وهو أهم تغيير في البناء الداخلي وما يصاحبه من علاقات جديدة بين أجزاء الجسم واستواء في مظهر الحُمَيل ويتميز بوضوح عن طور المضغة الذي قبله،
قال تعالى: (فَخَلَقْنَا الْمُضْغَةَ عِظَامًا(14) سورة المؤمنون.
