تدور أحداث الرواية حول مُدرِّسة شابة تنقلب حياتها رأسًا على عقب بعد مقتل زوجها في ظروف غامضة. لا يتوقف الألم عند الفقد، بل تكتشف أن أمها وابنتها أصبحتا مطاردتين من بعض أفراد قبيلة زوجها، الذين يسعون لقتلهما بدعوى الخيانة والخروج عن تقاليد وأعراف القبيلة الصارمة.
أمام هذا الخطر الداهم، تجد نفسها مضطرة لاتخاذ قرار مصيري؛ فتشدّ الرحال إلى موطن قبيلة زوجها، المكان الذي طالما أخفى عنها حقيقته. هناك تبدأ رحلتها في البحث عن الأسرار التي عاش ومات وهو يخفيها، ومحاولة فهم الحقيقة الكاملة وراء الاتهامات، إلى جانب سعيها للحصول على الميراث الذي قد يكون طوق النجاة الوحيد، وحماية نفسها وعائلتها من مصير مجهول يقترب أكثر مع كل.
