آمن حجازى بأن رسالة الأدب هى خدمة المجتمع والتعبير عن آماله وحاجاته؛ لأن الفن جزء من حياة الشعب، وعلى الأديب أن يعايش مشكلات أمته. هذا الكتاب عبارة عن شرح للأحداث التى مرت بالشيخ فى السنوات بعد عام 1299ه. فقد كتب الجزء الأول عام 1316ه، حين كان فى السجن، والجزء الثانى فى عام 1320ه حين أطلق سراحه. وسيكتب فى المستقبل قصته أيضًا منذ عام 1299ه وما بعدها (حتى 1316ه).
