للشرقيين أبراجهم الفلكية الخاصة بهم, كما هو الأمر عند الغربيين. ومع ذلك فإن النظام الشرقي يتكون من دائرة مؤلفة من 12 سنة بدلاً من 12 شهراً ولكل سنة من سنوات هذه الدائرة رمز حيواني خاص بها, كما أن معاني وأصل كل رمز من هذه الرموز تعود إلى الهند والصين القديمتين. وتبعاً لإحدى القصص اليابانية التقليدية فيما يتعلق بأصل هذا النظام الفلكي, فإن الأمر بدأ كالتالي: في رأس إحدى السنوات الجديدة في العصور القديمة دعا بوذا الحيوانات التي سوف تأتي وتقدم الولاء له ستنال هدية لقاء هذا الولاء وهذا الإخلاص وكعلامة على تكريم الحيوانات التي ستأتي إليه, فإنه سيعطي لكل حيوان من هذه الحيوانات سنة تسمى باسمه. ومن بين حيوانات العالم كافةً, لم تأت سوى هذه الحيوانات الإثني عشر, وقد جاءت بالترتيب التالي: الجرذ والثور, والنمر والأرنب, والتنين والأفعى والحصان, الخروف والقرد, والديك والكلب والخنزير. وعندما تلقّى كل حيوان سنته مكافأة لقدومه, أعطى كل من هذه الحيوانات صفاته المميزة للسنة التي تلقاها هدية له, جاعلاً منها سنة خاصة به وحده. وتبعاً للاعتقاد الياباني, فالأشخاص المولودون في إحدى سنوات هذه الدائرة سوف يتمتعون بالصفات التي تميز الحيوان الذي يرمز إلى هذه السنة . ويمكن, تبعاً لذلك, التنبؤ بحظ أي شخص من خلال هذه الرموز الفلكية الإثني عشر. إذ يمكن تحديد معالم شخصيته, ومعرفة نقاط ضعفه وقوته. ما هي المواهب التي يتمتع بها, وكيف يمكنه استخدامها؟ ما هي حدوده, وكيف يمكن له أن يعرفها؟
هذا ما ستشرحه فصول هذا الكتاب القيم الذي يتخذ من كل برج محطاً للدراسة والتنقيب ليكشف للقارئ عن أسراره, وصفات حامله ومميزاته, حتى بعض ما تخفيه له الأيام سواء من الناحية الشخصية أو الاجتماعية أو حتى من الناحية السياسية على صعيد وطنه. وبمثابة دليل مساعد, فإن الصفحتين السادسة من أول الكتاب والأخيرة منه تحتويان على ست دورات من روزنامة الخط اليابانية من سنة 1900 إلى سنة 1971.
