لا يستطيع الكاتب في النص التاريخي أن يغير الحدث أو يتصور ما جرى من أحداث، دون الرجوع إلى المصادر الرئيسية، ويستوثق منها أو يراجع الروايات التاريخية ويحللها ليعتمد الأوثق والأدق ويبعد ما يراه مجانياً للصواب، ويؤكد تصوره بالحقائق فتحليل الروايات ضرورة.
وإذا أراد أن يعالج النص التاريخي بأسلوب أدبي ليقربه من القارئ لا بد أن يكون قد اطلع على كثير مما خطته يد الأدباء الذين جعلوا أحداث التاريخ مادة لكتاباتهم.
لقد كان الرافعي أستاذاً، عالج الحدث التاريخي بأسلوب أدبي ساحر، وكان العقاد فيلسوفاً حين أخذ على عاتقه كتابة التاريخ أو تراجم العمالقة بأسلوبه الأدبي.
فكتابة التاريخ بأسلوب أدبي، تحتاج إلى عمل جاد، بعيد عن الخيال، وتحتاج إلى قدرة لمتابعة الأحداث التاريخية كما يتصورها الكاتب من خلال ما اطلع عليه، وما رجحه.

كتاب في التاريخ الإسلامي يؤرخ للفترة ما بين 650 و707 للهجرة ذاكراً أحداث كل سنة، وهذه الفترة التي كان فيها ابتداء الدولة التركية وانتشارها في البلاد الشامية والمصرية، واستيلائها على الثغور الساحلية، وامتدادها إلى المماليك الحلبية والفراتية.
