تتمحور الرواية حول الشخصية الرئيسية ( آدم ) الذي يولد في قرية صغيرة وهو مشوه خلقيا ليصاب من في القرية بالفزع من تشوهه الخلقي ويصبح آدم مضطهدا من قبل الكنيسة وأهالي القرية وويغدو العدو المتفرد لسكان القرية اللذين يلقبونه بالغول , ويقع آدم الرجل اللطيف بحب آيف الفتاة الضريرة والتي تعود نعمة البصر لها بعد دخولها منزل آدم لتغضب الكنيسة من تلك العلاقة التي اعتبرتها مجانسة للشيطان من قبل أيف وتقرر التخلص منهما ليواجه آدم وآيف أفكار الكنيسة السوداوية ومتتبعينهم من أهالي القرية
