هذه الدراسة القيمة، المنصفة، عن شمالي جزيرة العرب في منتصف القرن التاسع عشر، وضعها المستعرب الفنلندي جورج أوغست فالين، بعد زيارتين قام بهما إلى تلك البلاد، ونشرت باللغة الإنكليزية في جريدة الجمعية الجغرافية الملكية في لندن على دفعتين أولاهما سنة 1852، وهي التي توفي فيها الكاتب، والأخرى بعد ستاين من وفاته أي سنة 1854. وشاء سوء خط الرجل، وقد رافقه أكثر أيام، أن تبقى روائع دراسته الممتازة مجهولة من جماهير القراء، لم يطلع عليها إلا قبضة من علماء الاختصاص بجغرافية العرب وتاريخهم، في حين كونها أعظم دراسة في موضوعها كتبها غربي في ذلك الزمان. أما صاحبنا الشيخ عبد الولي فعرف بأنه الرائد الأوروبي الحقيقي الذي وفق إلى دخول شمالي الجزيرة إذ رحل إليها مرتين وعاد منها بمعلومات بكر عدها العلماء كنوزاً. وعلى ضيق ذات يده، وحر الصحراء، وقلة الماء، وبدائية الناس، وأخطار الغزو الذي لم يألفه في أوروبا، أصر عبد الولي على مصارعة وعورة المسالك وتحمل شظف العيش ومخاوف قطع الطرق، ليعرف أكثر ما يستطيع غريب معرفته عن لهجات البلاد وأراضيها وقبائلها وتقاليدها وتجارتها وزراعتها وتربتها ومناخاتها مياهها ومحاصيلها، وما إليها.
