الغيول عبارة عن عيون تستمد الماء من الشقوق والإنكسارات التي تمزق التكوينات الصخرية التي تتكون فيها والتي تتسرب إليها مياه الأمطار فتملؤها وتبقى مختزنة إلى أن تجد فتحة في الصخر تخرج فيها، وتوجد هذه الفتحات عادة في جوانب الجبال فتنحدر فيها المياه إلى الأودية وتكوّن مجاري مائية سطحية دائمة.
ويتناول هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا دراسة تاريخية لغيول صنعاء، من المصادر التاريخية والوثائق المتوفرة لدى ورثة ملاّك الغيول. ومن خلال الآثار المادية الباقية، تم حصر هذه الغيول وتحديد منابعها ومصباتها وتتبع مساراتها، بغرض توفير معلومات أساسية عن تلك الغيول في مدينة صنعاء وحاجة المدينة إليها في الاستخدامات اليومية... وطرق توزيع الحياة على الأراضي الزراعية، ابتداءً من منابعها حتى مصباتها.
كما تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى توفير مادة كافية موثقة عن هذه الغيول بأبعادها التاريخية والاجتماعية لتكون بين يدي الباحثين والمهتمين بأحوال مياه العاصمة اليمنية حاضراً أو مستقبلاً كتجربة تاريخية هامة وعريقة.
