لم يكشف كافكا عن جوهره من قبل كما فعل في رسائله إلى ميلينا، والّتي بدأت كمراسلات عمليّة بينهما، لتتطوّر لاحقاً إلى شغف "رسائل حبّ"، كانت ميلينا امرأةً موهوبةً جذابة في الثالثة والعشرين من عمرها، ومترجمةَ أعمال كافكا إلى اللغة التشيكيّة، وكانت قادرةً على أن تميّز عبقريّته الفذّة الواضحة في حبكات قصصه وشخصيّات قصصه المعقّدة.
أمّا، بالنسبة إلى كافكا ابن السادسة والثلاثين، فقد كانت "كشعلة نارٍ لم يرَ مثلها يوماً"، فأمامها فقط كشف عن حميميّته، وهي وحدها مَن ائتمنها على مذكراته بعد إنتهاء علاقتهما الغرامية.
تبدو كلمات كافكا في رسائله إلى ميلينا أكثر حميميّة، وطهارةً، وألماً عمّا هي في أعماله الأخرى، كشهادةٍ على وجوده البشريّ، وإنتظاره الدائم للمستحيل؛ وهذه ترجمة جديدة لكتابه الكلاسيكيّ الرائع هذا.
