ويتناول تشيخوف، رائد القصة القصيرة في هذا الكتاب، أفكاره وتأملاته حول صفات المثقف، والرحلات البحرية التي قام بها إلى سيبيريا وأوربا.. وتكشف النصوص جوانب معتمة من
حياته، وتوتر علاقته مع زوجته التي هجرته في فترة مرضه الأخير قبل وفاته.
وفي الرسائل الأولى لتشيخوف (29 يناير 1860 - 15 يوليو 1904) لأمه وابن عمته وإخوته، كان المال هو العنصر الأكثر تكرارًا، حيث يذكره تشيخوف في جميع الرسائل. أما بعد «الارتياح» المادي الذي لم يصل مرحلة الرخاء مطلقًا، يتحرر الكاتب من بوحه الشخصي ليبدأ بوحه إلى الآخر وعنه، ولتبدأ الاستفاضة في الوصف، وطرق باب السخرية التشيخوفية المميزة.
