من الرواية: هل تعرفون ما هي أسوأ مخاوف الخلد منا، وأكثرها رعبا؟ أنا اقول لكم، هو ملاقاة أفعى تسعى، خلال تجوالنا في ظلمات أنفاقنا، لأنه يعني الموت، إن لم يكن بسبب اللدغة المميتة، فبسبب الشلل الذي يحدثه الخوف لنا والذي يجعلنا لقمة سهلة لهذا الوحش الزاحف. وقد كنت ذات يوم ليس بالبعيد، أضرب على غير هدى في الأنفاق التي لا تنتهي، لكي أذهب ملل الفراغ عن نفسي، ولأتناسى معاناتنا المستديمة من شظف العيش مكبلا بأغلال الخوف من غارات الأفاعي التي لا تنتهي.. قررت يومها أن أتجاهل وجودها، وأتصرف ولو لبعض الوقت، وكأن جشعها وحبها للظلم لا يلقيان بظلالهما الثقيلة على أنفاقنا التي تمنع ظظلمتها رؤية تلك الظلال. أنا حينما أتذكر ذلك اليوم الآن، أستغرب ما فعلته، ولا أتذكر ما الذي كنت أريد أن أبرهنه بغبائي ذاك، فمن يلح في الخروج من جحره عندنا، لابد أن يلاقي حية حتفه ذات يوم، فنحن لا نستطيع أن نلتزم السير إلى جانب الجدران ،حذرا، لأن الجدران تفرض نفسها علينا ما دمنا في عرض الأنفاق الضيقة، ولذلك فإن حوادث الانحشار، والدهس على أصابع الأقدام واليدين، وحتى الرؤوس، طبيعية جدا عندنا. المهم أني قد فعلت ما فعلت، وللحقيقة أقول إنني أتصرف بشجاعة أحيانا، ولكن بحدود، لأنني حين لامست شيئا طريا ولزجا في ذلك اليوم، وأنا في أعماق الظلام، أدركت فورا أني قاب (لسان)، أو أدنى، من الموت الزؤام، فانهرت.
