لم تصدّق الأم سيرينا غوران للحظة أن ابنيها قد ماتا، فكرت في ذلك وهي تتأمل السماء بعد انتهاء احتفالات المئوية الثالثة لتأسيس نيروت والتي شاع خلالها أن الأبناء المختفون في الحرب سيعودون للاحتفال. لكن يا لخيبة أملها عندما مرّ شهر الاحتفال الذي قضته جالسة أمام عتبة دارها وبيدها إكليلين من الزهور دون عودة هاتان وبافات. ومع ذلك، لم تفقد سيرينا يقينها أبداً رغم أنها ذوت حزناً وتجعّد وجهها الأربعيني قبل أوانه.
وفي تلك الليلة الموعودة، قامت الأم فزعة بعد تعرضها إلى أحد الكوابيس وهرعت إلى شرفة المنزل تحدّق في مكان بعيد من المدينة. تأكدت أن شيئاً ما يحصل الآن، لكنها لم تتوقع أبداً أن هاتان وبافات كانا يقفان على شرفة الموت في اللحظة ذاتها بعد أن أتمّا عاماً ونصف في السجن يخططان وينفذان ما سترويه لاحقاً الكثير من النساء لأولادهن في قصص ما قبل النوم وما سيتفاخر بإجادة حكايته الكثير من الرجال في اجتماعات الشاي لأجيال متعاقبة.
