نام الشيخ أحمد نومة طبيعية، ولم يفق بعدها، حفيدته التي جاءته بالحليب، وجدته نائما وطيف ابتسامة على وجه "ما شاء الله" قال الملا وتفكر في دورة الموت التي تتقصد "الشباب" الذين لا يحتملون الزكام والبرد وأمراض الشتاء. " في الربيع يموت العشاق" وابتسم الشيخ، ولم يدر أين سمع هذه العبارة، في صوت لندن، أم من مثل كردي قديم، أم وجده في كتاب قرأه. حين وصل البيت، عرضت عليه زوجته أن تصنع فطورا، ولكنه فضل أن يغفو بعض الوقت، وكان الوقت مبكرًا على بث الإذاعة السورية التي تبدأ بالقرآن الكريم في الخامسة والنصف، وآنس من الفراش بقايا دف، وقاومته صور مختلفة تجمعت عند وسادته، صور ما ر مجلس العزاء وأحفاده في القامشلي، وطفولته البعيدة، هناك حسين قرأ الملا الحروف العربية أول مرة: أليف .. با.. ا.. ثا..." وصورة الشيخ يشجعه على القراءة، واندغمت الصور، وحاول الملا تفكيكها، ولكن النوم منعه.
