«فحين تَكلَّم عن عُودِها لم يكن هو الذي يَتكلم، وإنما كان الإعدادَ الذي أعدَّتْه هي؛ فهي تعرفُ تمامًا أن عُودَها جميل، وهي تعرفُ تمامًا كيف تجعلُه أعظمَ جمالًا، فلها وسيلتُها أن يسطعَ النهدان منها، ولها وسيلتُها أن يدقَّ الخصرُ وينفر ما دونه.»
لا تُصنَّف الخيانةُ كنوعٍ من الجريمةِ إلا إذا عُرفت، ويَزدادُ الأمرُ تعقيدًا إذا كانت الخيانةُ متبادلةً بين كلِّ الأطراف، وكلُّهم يَدَّعون الفضيلةَ والوفاء، هكذا هو المجتمعُ داخلَ القصةِ القصيرةِ التي شكَّلَ الكاتبُ الكبيرُ «ثروت أباظة» مَلامحَها بدِقَّة، وبلمحاتٍ سريعةٍ ولقطاتٍ خاطفةٍ كشفَ عن عددٍ كبيرٍ من الخياناتِ التي تَسري في المجتمعِ مع كلِّ نَفَسٍ يُخرِجُه أفرادُه؛ فزوجةٌ لا مكانَ لزوجِها في حياتِها، تخونُ أختَها، وزوجُ أختِها يُقيم علاقةً مع ابنتِها، وابنُها يَتمردُ ويخرجُ من تحتِ عباءتِها التي قيَّدتْه بها طوالَ حياتِه، وزوجُها يخونُها مع عاملةِ المنزل، خياناتٌ متعددةُ الصور، بعضُها واضح، ومُعظمُها يَخفى على الجميعِ لا يَعلمُه أحد؛ إنها «خائنة الأعين».
