ولدت موللر في 17 آب/أغسطس 1953 في غرب رومانيا لوالدين من أقلية تتحدث الألمانية، جاءت إلى ألمانيا في عام 1987 لتعيش في برلين.
وعملت بعد ذلك كمعلمة وأستاذة زائرة عام 2001 بجامعة توبنجن وفي عام 2005 في الجامعة الحرة ببرلين.
تكتب موللر القصة والشعر والرواية وتقوم بالترجمة، ومشهورة بأعمالها الأدبية التي نقلت ظروف الحياة الصعبة في رومانيا في ظل حكم الرئيس الروماني الأسبق نيكولاي تشاوتشيسكو.
حازت على العديد من الجوائز الأدبية الهامة أهمها حصولها على جائزة نوبل في الأدب عام 2009 لتكون المرأة الثانية عشر التي حصلت على الجائزة بهذا الفرع منذ إطلاقها عام 1901.

يمكن تلخيص الموضوعة الأساسية لكتابة هيرتا مولر السردية بأنها قضية الحرية في المقام الأول.
هناك من رأى بعد حصول الكاتية على جائزة نوبل للآداب 2009 أنها تمثل سرد الأقليات، المعذبة أو الغربة اللغوية والإشتغال على التمركز القومي لكونها عاشت حقبة طويلة من حياتها وراء أسوار رومانيا "تشاوشسكو" فكانت معاناتها من الدكتاتورية مضاعفة كمواطنة وكألمانية في بلد آخر.
وعندما تتحدث مولر عن أدبها وعبر اهتماماتها المتعددة: روائية وقاصة وشاعرة ومقالية ومترجمة تقول إنها تكتب عن ( الدكتاتورية) لأنها لم تعرف شيئاً آخر ولم ترى شيئاً آخر.
كان عليها مثلاً أن تقابل مترجمة روسية محترفة لتصحح لها مفرداتها أثناء الدراسة، ولكن في غابة بعيدة عن الأنظار كي لا يراقبها أحد، بطلات روايتها هذه (قلب حيوان) هن أيضاً يذهبن إلى الغابة ليلاقين عشاقهن، بعيداً عن الأعين، متعرضات للعقاب في أي لحظة ويغدو ( الراندي فو ) بترميز الفتيات وتشفيرهن للقاءات الغرامية عملاً فدائياً يمارسنه بسرية وخوف.
مولر نفسها ستعمل مترجمة في مصنع لكنها تضطر لترك عملها بسبب الاضطهاد والكبت ومحاولة إجبارها على التجسس.
