ولدت موللر في 17 آب/أغسطس 1953 في غرب رومانيا لوالدين من أقلية تتحدث الألمانية، جاءت إلى ألمانيا في عام 1987 لتعيش في برلين.
وعملت بعد ذلك كمعلمة وأستاذة زائرة عام 2001 بجامعة توبنجن وفي عام 2005 في الجامعة الحرة ببرلين.
تكتب موللر القصة والشعر والرواية وتقوم بالترجمة، ومشهورة بأعمالها الأدبية التي نقلت ظروف الحياة الصعبة في رومانيا في ظل حكم الرئيس الروماني الأسبق نيكولاي تشاوتشيسكو.
حازت على العديد من الجوائز الأدبية الهامة أهمها حصولها على جائزة نوبل في الأدب عام 2009 لتكون المرأة الثانية عشر التي حصلت على الجائزة بهذا الفرع منذ إطلاقها عام 1901.

هذا الكتاب يستعصى بعض الشئ على التصنيف أدبياً، فهو يحوى مجموعة مقالات ويضع محاضرات ودراسات فى اللغة والأدب، تنتثر فيها سيرة "هيرتا موللر" الذاتية كما تنتثر فى معظم مؤلفاتها سواء كانت شعراً أم نثراً، سيقابل القارئ بين السطور "هيرتا موللر" نفسها كذات منسحقة وضائعة ومريضة بالخوف القاتل من زبانية النظام الحاكم فى رومانيا، الذين واصلول ترويعها وترويع أهلها، سيقابل جدها الفلاح الفقير المجتهد الذى صار بتفوقه فى تجارة الغلال من أصحاب الاطيان، وعاش حتى شهد الشيوعيين وهم يؤممون أملاكه وبالكاد يسمحون له أن يعيش فى بيته الذى بناه، وسيقابل أمها التى عانت الإجهاد والجوع والرعب والبرد القاتل أثناء تنفيذها حكماً بالأشغال الشاقة فى الاتحاد السوفيتى، وسيقابل أباها الذى لا يصحو من سكره، ربما لجملة هذه الأسباب، وسيقابل وجهاً لوجه طوال الصفحات دكتاتوراً لا ينجنى أبداً إلا ليقتل.
