لا يبدأ السجن بالدخول إليه، ولا ينتهي بالخروج منه، لأن السجن أوسع من مكان ناء في أطراف الصحراء، وأكبر من جلادين يتلذذون بتعذيب البشر وإذلالهم، إنه حالة الخوف والشلل إزاء فكرة السجن.. لهذا تثير رواية "حز القيد" جملة من الأسئلة، وتتعمد رغم وضوحها الظاهري أن تظل قولاً مضمراً، يلمح دون أن يصرح، ويشي دون أن يوضح، ويوحي دون أن يشير، تاركاً للقارئ حرية اكتشاف الأمكنة والأزمنة، والأسماء والإشارات، وتأويل الأحداث والتفاصيل.
ولعل أولى الأسئلة التي يمكن أن تثار هي عن (قحطين) البلد الذي تقع فيه أحداث الرواية، والذي هو فضاء متخيل لا يتعين على خارطة الجغرافيا، لكن مضمر السرد يحيل القارئ إلى أزمنة ماضية أو حاضرة أو آتية أو ربما إلى أحداث بعينها وذكريات وشخوص ووقائع، وهي إذ تنوس بين تخوم البوح وأطلال الذاكرة، تحتمي بالمتخيل باعتباره فضاء الرواية الأوسع، لكن مناخ الخوف والترقب، والفقر والظلم، والشعور بالضآلة والتلاشي أمام سلطة باطشة ومهيمنة، وما يجري في السجون من تعذيب وامتهان لكرامة الإنسان، كل هذا يجعل من قحطين (حز القيد) حالة عربية قابلة للتعميم، ومرآة لأوطان كثيرة.
