رواية "جود المغمور" من أفضل روايات الروائى الكبير "توماس هاردى" تدور أحداثها حول "جود فاولي" وتبدأ بتعريفنا بطفولة جود و التناقض الذي عاشه هذا الصبي؛ فمعلم المدرسة "فيلوتسون" يوصيه بأن يعامل الحيوانات و الطيور برفق و أن يقرأ المزيد و المزيد من الكتب، وبالرغم من أن هذا الصبي اليتيم كان يعمل كفزاعة طيور في الحقول فإنه يمتثل لتعليمات معلمه و يسمح للطيور بأن تأكل من المحصول؛ لذلك فإنه يتعرض للضرب و الطرد من عمله.
