جاء هذا الكتاب ليوضح لنا أن هذه الأبيات التي تناقلتها الألسن وسارت بها الركبان هي من قصائد لا تقل عنها أهمية وجمال ولها مناسبات قيلت فيها تبين للقارئ مدى مناسبتها للإستشهاد بها: ولتوضيح هذا كله جمع المؤلف ما يزيد عن مائة بيت تكاد تكون هي الأشهر على الإطلاق وذكر تراجم قائليها بإيجاز وحدد المناسبة التي قيلت بها القصيدة والأبيات التي ذكرت فيها... مستعيناً ببعض أمهات الكثب كالشعر والشعراء لــ"ابن قتيبة"، وطبقات الشعراء لــ"ابن المعتز"، وجمهرة أشعار العرب لــ"أبي زيد القرشي"، والمحاسن والأضداد للــ"جاحظ"، والوافي بالوفيات للصفدي، والأغاني لـ"أصفهاني"، ومجمع الأمثال للــ"ميداني"، ووفيات الأعيان وأبناء هذا الزمان لــ"ابن خلكان".
