المغمورون، بعد مرور ثلاثة أعوام على نجاح «المتميزون» في تحرير العالم من آفات عصر الجمال التي أجبرت الأفراد على أن يكونوا مواطنين مذعنين، بدأ المجتمع في اتخاذ شكل جديد. اضطرت كل مدينة إلى البحث عن سبيل للتعامل مع الضغط الجديد على مواردها، الذي تولد مع طاقات الإبداع التي تحررت لدى الأفراد. تدور أحداث هذه القصة في اليابان، إحدى البلدان التي اختارت الاعتماد على «اقتصاد الشهرة»؛ فتكافئ مواطنيها إما بنقاط الاستحقاق عن أدائهم مهام إنتاجية تساعد مدينتهم، أو بمنحهم رتبةَ شهرة، وهي معيار لقياس مدى شعبية الفرد. يملك كل مواطن مدونة خاصة ويتابع بهوس رتبة الشهرة الخاصة به، على أمل اكتساب الشهرة والخروج من مجتمع «المغمورين». تسعى آيا فيوز، بطلة الرواية، إلى تحقيق شهرة بالعمل كمدونة أخبار، أو صحفية هاوية، تصور القصص بكاميرتها الطائرة المعدلة «موجل» وتنشرها بمدونتها كي يطلع عليها سكان المدينة.
