يعتبر النقل من المستلزمات الأساسية لتحقيق التطور والانتعاش الاقتصادي والاجتماعي السريع في المجتمع. ولا أدل على أهمية قطاع النقل من اعتماده كمؤشر لقياس تطور الدول، باعتباره عنصراً أساسياً لعملية البناء والتنمية. إن الدول المتطورة أدركت أهمية قطاع النقل منذ وقت مبكر وعملت على تخطيطه على أسس سليمة لمواجهة احتياجاتها المتزايدة وفي ضوء امكاناتها المتاحة.
أما في الدول النامية فتبرز الحاجة باستمرار إلى توافر مؤسسات ذات كفاءة لتخطيط قطاع النقل على أسس علمية بسبب تخلف هذا القطاع فيها.
لقد انعكست آثار هذا التخلف في قطاع النقل على الاقتصاد العربي بصورة واضحة. فعلى الصعيد القطري عانت الأقطار العربية من مشكلات النقص الخطير في مرافق وخدمات النقل، مما تسبب في خلق المصاعب أمام تنفيذ برامج وخطط التنمية القومية الشاملة على الوجه المطلوب. أما على الصعيد القومي فقد أعاق غياب شبكات نقل متطورة بين ألقطار العربية، جهود قيام تبادل تجاري فيما بينها بالمستوى المطلوب.
وهذا الكتاب دراسة في جغرافية النقل التي هي فرع من فروع، المعرفة الجغرافية، والتي تعني بدراسة النقل من حيث تطوره وبنيته وعلاقته بالتنمية وعلى كافة المستويات.
