في هذه الكوميديا السوداء، ثمّة دون كيخوته معاصرة، موظف عادي في شركة ليست بتلك الدرجة من تلبية المطامح، يقرر فجأة ان يكون ثروة من خلال العمل بالتجارة، ويختار بالذات تجارة الجبنة التي يكره رائحتها ويصفها في أكثر من مووضع بالنتانة، وذلك إثر نصيحة غادرة من أحد معارفه يحمل اسم (فان سخونبيكه)، يطرحه الكاتب في مقدمة تعريفه بشخوص الرواية، على انه من يقف وراء جمع المتاعب. انها بتعريف معاصر، رواية تتناول قبح الرأسماليّة وكيف تقوم تُروسها الحديدية العملاقة بسحق الانسان المغلوب على أمره.
إن (فرانس لارمانس)، وهو الشخصية المحورية التي تدور أحداث الرواية على لسانه، شخص ذو حظّ عاثر غالباً ما نجده بيننا، بل نلتقيه عند كل الاماكن وفي سائر الاوقات. إنه إنسان عاديّ يعيش أزمة منتصف العمر ويسعى الى الثراء دون أية مؤهلات سوى الطموح المفاجئ بالحصول على المال بعد سلسلة تراكمية من اليأس وخيبات الامل. في هذه الرواية التي اختارتها صحيفة الغارديان عام 2009 كواحدة من ألف رواية يجب أن تقرأ، ميلودراما عن رتابة عيش سببتها الحياة الاسرية غير المفعمة والتدرجات الوظيفية اللامجدية.
