الشخصية التي يتناولها هذا الكتاب بالبحث هي شخصية أبو موسى "جابر بن حيّان" بن عبد الله الكوفي المعروف بالصوفي، هو علم من أعلام الفكر العربي، عالم مشارك في الطبيعة والكيمياء والفلسفة والفلك والأدب وغيرها. وكان متقدماً في العلوم الطبيعية بارعاً فيها من صناعة الكيمياء، وله فيها تواليف كثيرة ومصنفات مشهورة، وكان مع هذا مشرفاً على كثير من علوم الفلسفة وتقليداً للعلم المعروف علم الباطن. وقد كانت لجابر بن حيّان رسائل في علم الكيمياء هذا وأن أول ما تثيره الرسائل تلك من المسائل، مسألة تتصل بتاريخ الدين، فكما أن أصحاب الكيمياء القدامى من اليونانيين مزجوا تعاليمهم الكيميائية بمذاهب العرفان أو الفنوسطية المنتشرة في مسيحية زمانهم، كذلك مزج جابر علومه بنظريات العرفان المنتشرة عند أهل الإسلام، وقد أثرت رسائل جابر هذه في كيمياء والعرب المتأخرة تأثيراً كبيراً، ذلك أن كتّاب العرب المتأخرين جميعاً ينقلون عنه، وقد كتب كثير منهم شروحاً على رسائله، وترجمت كتب من مجموع تواليفه إلى اللاتينية والذي يهمنا من أمر هذا العلم أن جابرا كان أقدم علماء العرب في الكيمياء وأكثرهم شهرة، ولكن نشأ عن كثيرة من تسمّوا باسمه من معاصريه، صعوبة تميز ما يجب نسبته إليه منها، وقد نقل عدد غير قليل من كتبه إلى اللغة اللاتنية، كما نقل كتابه، "الاستتمام" الذي هو من أهم كتبه، إلى اللغة الفرنسية سنة 1762م، فدل هذا على دوام نفوذه العلمي في أوربة زمناً طويلاً.
