في نهاية القرن الثالث عشر، في حوالي عام 1293، كان المكتشف ماركو بولو يسافر عبر جنوب شرق آسيا في المنطقة التي تعرف اليوم بماينمار أو بورما. قضى ماركو بولو 20 عامًا في السفر حول القارة الآسيوية في سلسلة من الرحلات على طول الطريق القديم والمعروف باسم طريق الحرير. بعدها دخل في خدمة إمبراطور المغول في الصين قبلاي خان. أعجب الإمبراطور به وعينه سفيرًا. خلال عمله مع كوبلاي خان، سافر عبر الجبال في جنوب غرب الصين على حدود ميانمار. يقول ماركو بولو: "عبر تلك التلال الكثيفة بغابات البامبو، نزلنا إلى وادي نهر واسع مليء بالحيوانات البرية. عندما تترك مقاطعة كأردان دان، تدخل في نزول شاسع تسافر فيه دون تغيير لمدة يومين ونصف، خلال هذه الرحلة لا توجد مساكن. بعدها تصل إلى سهل واسع، وما وراء ذلك باتجاه الجنوب نحو حدود الهند تقع مدينة مايان. الرحلة تستغرق 15 يومًا عبر بلاد كثيرًا ما تكون مهجورة وغابات مليئة بالفيلة ووحيد القرن وغيرها من الوحوش البرية، بحيث لا يبدو أن هناك أي مسكن في هذا البلد. وجدت العديد من الفيلة والثيران البرية الكبيرة والجميلة والغزلان البيضاء وغيرها من الحيوانات."
