تاريخ جهنم - جورج بنواإن فكرة جهنم أو الجحيم هى سمة ثابتة لكل الحضارات ، نجدها فى أقدم النصوص البشرية مرتبطة بالمفاهيم الدينية الأولى ، كما نجدها فى الكتابات المعاصرة الملحدة ، وجهنم مكان كئيب مشئوم يقع فى العالم الآخر أو هى حالة ضيق وغم وجوديين نعيشها بدءاً بهذه الحياة ، وهى متعددة الأشكال وقابلة للتكيف تبعاً لنماذج الحضارات .. بتلك الكلمات يبدأ المؤرخ والأديب الفرنسى جورج بنوا، مدخل كتابه "تاريخ جهنم" ، وفيه يستعرض كيف ترى الديانات المختلفة سواء سماوية أو وضعية "جهنم" ، وما الصورة المتخذة عنها ، حيث أن لا أحد من الأحياء يعرف شكل جهنم حقيقةً والفكرة المتخذة عنها لا تتعدى كونها مكانا مظلما مليئا بكافة أشكال العذابات، يعاقب فيه مذنبين الحياة ويدفعون فيه ثمن أخطائهم الجسيمة التى ارتكبوها خلال حياتهم .
