تخرج في الكلية العسكرية عام ١٩٥٦ وفي كلية الأركان عام ١٩٦٦. نُقل إلى وزارة الخارجية عام ١٩٧٣ واستقال منها عام ١٩٧٧ بدرجة وزير مفوض.
استأثر النضال الوطني باهتمامه مبكراً، مما عرضه لاضطهاد الحكومات المتعاقبة بالملاحقة والاعتقال والسجن. قضى في القاهرة (١٢٨٣) يوماً كلاجئ سياسي بين عامي ١٩٦٩ و ١٩٧٣. آخر اعتقال وسجن سياسي له كان في ٩ فبراير ١٩٩١ ولمدة (٢٠٠٣) يوماً، ولكنه لم يتأثر بالترغيب ولا بالترهيب.

"بريق القوافي" كتابٌ أدبيٌّ صدر عام 2026م في بغداد، يقع في 116 صفحة تضمّ 343 بيتاً انتقاها المؤلف بعنايةٍ من عيون الشعر العربي على مرّ العصور، مصحوبةً بمقدمة رصينة تتناول مزايا اللغة العربية وخصائص شعرها وصلته بالغناء والموسيقى.
يجمع الكتاب روائع كبار الشعراء من المتنبي والبحتري والبوصيري وابن زيدون، إلى أحمد شوقي وخليل جبران وحافظ جميل وسواهم، في موضوعات متنوعة تشمل الحنين والغزل والحكمة والتصوف والرثاء. وتكمن قيمة هذا العمل في حسن الانتقاء والترتيب، إذ يُقدّم للقارئ خلاصةً مُصفّاةً من أجمل ما قالته العرب في الشعر، في مرجعٍ أدبيٍّ جامع يُسعد كل محبٍّ للكلمة العربية.
