يعيد المؤلف في هذا الكتاب المصطلحات العروضية التي تستعصى على الفهم إلى البيئة الزمانية التي اغترف منها الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي تلك الأسماء, وبنى الكاتب كتابه على ثلاثة أسس: أولها اللغة, حيث المتحرك والساكن بين الحروف, وتوالي الحركات, بما يعتقد أنه من أصول صحة استقامة اللفظ, إذ من غير الممكن تتابع أكثر من أربع حركات على اللسان إلا ما جاء مصنوعا خروجا على المألوف, كما أنه لا يجوز الابتداء بساكن والوقوف على متحرك, أما الأساس الثاني الذي اعتمده صاحب الكتاب فهو علم الحساب, فالتفاعيل تقوم على عدد الأحرف, واكتفى الكاتب بأصل تفعيلتين اثنتين في علم العروض تتفرع عنهما باقي تفاعيل جميع الأبحر, والأساس الثالث هو توافق اللغة والحساب بتواتر النطق لينشأ النغم الذي يأتي مقاطع صوتية موائمة لانسياب اللفظ في الكلام الموزون
كما احتوى الكتاب على جداول توضيحية لكافة الأبحر, تنقل التفاعيل من صيغها المعتادة, إلى شكل جديد يثبت الأوتاد, ويبين الأسباب, ليسهل على من يواكب العروض التصرف بالزحافات, أو ركوب العلل بما لا يخل بالوزن, وجعل جداول أخرى تبين الزحافات, وتحدد مواقعها, وتوضح العلل, وتشير إلى أماكنها, مؤكدا على أن الزحافات والعلل لا تقع على عواهنها, دون احتساب
الكتاب من وجهة نظر الكاتب, قرب بعض المفاهيم لطالبي علم العروض, وتجاوز عن عجمة بعض المصطلحات التي كانت تعد عائقا أمام الذين كانوا ينثنون سريعا عن عمود الشعر إلى الشعر المرسل, لاعتقادهم بصعوبة الولوج إليه, فصار من الممكن لمن يرغب بإحكام أوزان التفاعيل أن يتمكن من ذلك بالقراءة المتأنية للكتاب, مع بعض الجلد على الاستقراء العروضي للشواهد التي جاءت في غالبها الأعم من أشعار من علت كعوبهم في حومة الشعر, ولم يلجأ للاستشهاد إلا ما ندر بشعر شعراء العصور المتأخرة, وذلك وفق قوله تأصيلا لقواعد الشعر التي لم تأت عرضا, أو وضعا متأخرا كما يعتقد الكثيرون.
