هذا الكتاب شرح لكتاب "العروض والقوافي" لإسماعيل بن أبي بكر المقري، وهو جزء من كتابه "الشرف الوافي في علم الفقه والتاريخ والنحو والعرض والقوافي"، وهو كتاب واضح المعالم، سهل التبويب، جيد التأليف، مختصر العبارة، قصد به التبسيط لهذا النوع من الفن، إلا أنه جاء مقتضباً في كثير من مسائله، غامضاً في بعض جوانبه.. يحتاج طالب العلم إلي شرح وإيضاح لما غمض منه ليفهمه، وإلي بسط الأمثلة؛ ليدرك الفائدة التي هدف إليها المؤلف، فكان مني إسهاماً متواضعاً قدمته للقراء عامة، والمهتمين بهذا النوع من العلوم خاصة؛ لتعم الفائدة من هذا الكتاب الجليل.
أرجو أن يتقبله القارئ الكريم مني بمجمله، وأن يتلمس لي العذر فيما حصل عندي من قصور عن الوصول إلي الهدف المنشود، فقد أخلصت فيه النية لله تعالي، وحررت أبوبه وفصوله حسب المتبع في تصانيف هذا الفن، وجعلته سهل التناول، كثر الأمثلة، وأجليت غموض بعض مسائله، وأزلت إبهام بعض قضاياه، والحمد لله أولا وآخراً، فهو مولاي ونعم النصير.
