كل ما يحيا يبحث عن عالم أفضل. البشر والحيوانات والنباتات، وحتي الكائنات وحيدة الخلية كلها في حالة نشاط دائم، كلها تحاول أن تحسن وضعها، أو هي على الأقل تحاول أن تتجنب التدهور. وحتي عندما ينام الكائن الحي فإنه يحفظ بنشاطٍ حالة نومه. إن عمق النوم (أو ضحالته) هو حالة من صنع الكائن، حالة تُعزِز نومه ( أو تيقيه يقظاً). كل كائن حي منشغل دوماً بمهمة حل المشاكل. تنشأ المشاكل عن تقييمه لوضعه ولبيئته- الأوضاع التي يحاول الكائن تحسينها.
وكثيراً ما يتضح أن الحل الذي يجربه الكائن مضلَل، إذ يجعل الأوضاع أسوأ. عندئذ تبذل محاولات جديدة- ينشط الكائن مرة أخري يجرب ويخطئ.
يمكننا أن نلحظ أن الحياة- حتي على مستوي الكائنات وحيدة الخلية- تجلب الى العالم شيئاً لم يسبق وجوده: مشاكل ومحاولات نشطة لحلها؛ تقييمات وقيماً؛ تجارب وأخطاء.
