قال لي راعي أغنام مفلس: "انظر إلى حالي، لقد خسرت كل أغنامي ولكني ما زلت مطمئن النفس مبتسمًا، لقد اكتشفت جانبًا مشرقًا للخسارة هون عليّ مصيبتي، حسنًا لن اضطر إلى الخوف من الذئاب بعد الآن".نظرت في عينيه ثم ربت على كتفه قائلًا: "عليك أن تخاف الآن أكثر من أي وقتٍ مضى، فإن تضورت الذئاب جوعًا فستلتهمك أنت عوضًا عن أغنامك، الحياة منذ الأزل هي صراع بقاء محفوفٌ بالمخاطر، والضعيف فيها حينما يخسر شيئًا من القليل الذي يملكه تتضاءل فرصه في النجاة، اسمع يا هذا لا يوجد جانب مشرق للخسارة، كما لا توجد أية سعادة في الفقر والضعف، الحب والتضحية هما للأقوياء فقط، أما أنت فالخوف يجب أن يكون صاحبك الذي لا يفارقك، لا أعدك أن خسارتك ستجعل منك ذئبًا يستطيع ردع الذئاب عن التهامه، ولكن أعدك إن جعلك الخوف أرنبًا فإنك ستبقى فترة أطول من تلك التي ستبقاها وأنت باسمٌ كالأبله".
