يعتمد الاتجاه الأصولى فى فهمه للدين على أقوال السلف وتفسيراتهم اعتمادا كليا يصل إلى حد تحويل هذه الأقوال إلى نصوص لايمكن مناقشتها أو محاولة الاجتهاد وإعادة النظر فيها, بل أكثر من ذلك فإن الخطاب الدينى الأصولى يستبعد الأعمال العقلية المستنيرة فى التراث ولا يأخذ بها, وذلك تمشيا مع أيديولوجيته أو مذهبه الرجعى, وبالتالى لا يولى أى أهمية لمذاهب المعتزلة والفلاسفة المسلمين القدماء بل ويرفضها- على الرغم من أنه يحتج أحيانا بل ويتفاخر بهذا الجانب من التراث, إلا أن هذا يحدث عند المقارنة بين حضارة المسلمين وأحوال أوروبا فى القرون الوسطى- واستعارة أوروبا لمنهج التفكير العقلى عند المسلمين فى مجال العلوم الطبيعية, وهذا التفاخر هو مجرد سبب أو مبرر يعتمده الخطاب الدينى الأصولى كى يسمح للمسلمين بالانتفاع بالثمرات المادية للتقدم العلمى الأوروبى والاستفادة بنتائج الثورة الصناعية هناك, بحجة أن المسلمين والفكر التجريبى الإسلامى لأسلافنا هو النواة التى أقام عليها الأوروبيون نهضتهم الصناعية وتقدمهم العلمى دون أن يتعدى ذلك بالطبع للدعوة للاستفادة من الثمرات الأخرى للتقدم الأوروبى وعلى الأخص فى المجال السياسى والثقافى, باعتبار أن هذه المنتجات تدخل ضمن السياسة العلمانية الكافرة التى انحرفت إليها الأفكار الأوروبية كنتيجة للحرب ضد الكنيسة.
