إن الهايكو هو التعبير العفوي عن المشاعر والحياة من خلال فصول الطبيعة الأربعة.
الهايكو إذاً مستمَدٌّ من الطبيعة ومُستلهَم من التأمل في اللحظة الراهنة.
ربما يعتبر الهايكو أصغر قصيدة نسجها الوجدان والعقل البشري، فهو يتشكل من وحدة شعرية متكاملة تنقسم إلى سبعة عشر مقطع لفظي، تنتظم في ثلاثة أسطر، تتميز بلغة مكثّفة وبسيطة وشفافة، يستحيل أن تخلو من ذكر للفصول الأربعة أو الإشارة والإيحاء على ما يدل عليها.
هو الهايكو الذي يصور الطبيعة بصفاء لغوي ودقة في الوصف مغلقاً الباب عن كل تفسير مغرق في التأويل.
فن حسي وصفي يحاول أسر الصور الطبيعية المنفلتة التي تمر من بين فروج الحياة اليومية فلا تعني لنا غير لحظة حسية مارقة في الزوال، يتم تخليدها في موجز كلمات تعبر عن مسرة أو حزن.
إنه يلتقط معرفة بصرية في لحظة موجزة ومحددة في مكان محدد، قد يكون نهراً أو بحراً أو بحيرة أو حقلاً أو عشباً أو جبلاً... وهو في الوقت نفسه تعبير عن رغبة وجودية ملحة في إقتناص منظر متغير وسريع الزوال، وسيلته في التصوير لغة شفافة، سلسة وواضحة خالية من الإلتباس، هذه البساطة الظاهرة هي التي تجعل من الهايكو أكثر تداولاً وإنتشاراً وأكثر شعبية.
